Got a big event or special occasion coming up? You can head to the salon to get your hair done professionally or get a gloss treatment, but those can be costly and inconvenient. If you’d like to save time and money, an affordable DIY option is to do a hot oil treatment at home. Not sure how to pull it off? Keep reading!

How Do Hot Oil Treatments Work?

Hot oil treatments work by heating up some plant-based oil and applying it to the hair, and letting it sit for some time. The oil seals the hair cuticle, which can help to strengthen and protect your hair, and the hair usually feels soft and looks glossy afterward. These treatments were quite popular in the 90s and are now making a comeback (as most things do).

In this post, I will provide some great options of wonderful oils for you to try if you’re interested in trying this treatment out.

Benefits of Hot Oil Treatments

There are many benefits of hot oil treatments. Many of the plant oils used in hot oil treatments have properties that help to protect and moisturize your hair. These treatments also give you the added benefit of increasing hair strength, reducing frizz, creating fewer split ends, helping to reduce dryness of the hair and scalp, and they have also been known to help with dandruff relief and increase blood flow in the scalp which promotes healthier hair.

If your hair is dry, frizzy, and prone to split ends,  a hot oil treatment may be beneficial, because the hot oil works by sealing the hair cuticle to help protect your hair from damage.

Recommended Treatments

Hobe Labs Energizer Hot Jojoba Oil Hair Treatment with Vitamin A & E

Jojoba oil has been used for centuries as a deep moisturizer for the hair and scalp. Hobe Labs Energizer Hot Jojoba Oil Hair Treatment helps open up the hair cuticle to coat each imbrication on the hair lightly and penetrates the sebum build-up to moisturize the follicle openings. It contains rosemary extract that provides a volatile oil stimulant to draw blood to the scalp and hair follicles, to strengthen and revitalize the hairs’ thin and brittle hair strands. Jojoba oil promotes luxurious hair growth. It contains no artificial colors or oil fillers and leaves the hair deeply conditioned and damage-free. It is recommended that this product be used once or twice a week.

Cliganic 100% Pure & Natural Jojoba Oil

Cliganic Organic Jojoba Oil is 100% pure cold pressed. It is all-natural and unrefined, which helps to make it a great treatment for dry skin and hair. It helps to mimic the skin’s sebum which makes it a great moisturizer. The jojoba oil has a slightly nutty, earthy scent. Not only is this great for hair care, but it also adds shine, reduces grease, and protects against split ends.

My discovery when doing this article and testing out this product was that a scalp massage with jojoba oil could help clear out clogged pores and follicles. This product has the additional benefit of being used as a face moisturizer for all skin types, as it won’t clog pores and helps to balance oil production. It is absorbed quickly and doesn’t leave any nasty greasy residue. My husband uses this as his beard and mustache moisturizer as well as a body moisturizer. The list goes on and on for the uses of this self-care staple.

Leven Rose Emu Oil

I stumbled across this product while researching this article. Leven Rose Emu Oil is 100% pure & organic Emu Oil with Rose extract, which has maximum healing and soothing benefits. While it is not plant-based, I learned through my research on and testing of this product that emu oil has become a significant factor in alternative treatments for skincare, arthritis, hair loss, and many other conditions. The Aborigines of Australia have used emu oil for centuries.

Two key natural ingredients found in the oil are linoleic acid and oleic acid. Combining both relieves joint and muscle pain to provide a natural, long-lasting anti-inflammatory effect.

Leven Rose is full of essential fatty acids Omega 3, 6, and 9, which, along with the linoleic and oleic acids, are great for hair growth and natural rejuvenation. It’s the ultimate healing oil for dry skin because its unique molecular structure allows it to heal deeper than other oils. My British husband gets attacked badly by mosquitos, and I learned through research that this could help, and by golly gosh, it did. His bites disappear in hours. As he said, this is the “bee’s knees.”

Cococare Argan Hair Serum

This is a paraben- and alcohol-free serum that helps to add luster and sheen. Cococare Argan Serum helps to smooth frizz and flyaways while adding a healthy shine to your hair. It’s suitable for all hair types and is enriched with vitamin E which helps to leave hair feeling soft and silky. This is a great product to use to condition and hydrate your skin.

Wow Skin Science Onion Black Seed Hair Oil

Wow Skin Science's Onion Black Seed Hair Oil is great for dry, damaged hair. It helps to rejuvenate lifeless hair with antioxidant-rich red onion and black seed oil. It helps strengthen strands to fight hair loss and treats damaged hair thanks to its Ayurvedic staples. It is non-sticky and fast absorbing, which helps to hydrate and seal in moisture.

This can also be used as an overnight hair treatment. The black-seed castor oil helps to form a protective barrier against environmental factors like UV rays, heat damage, and pollution. The plant-powered ingredients help to seal split ends, fight breakage, and boost healthy shine for both sexes.

Heritage Store Organic Castor Oil

Heritage Store Organic Castor Oil is cold-pressed and provides a clean and nutrient-rich oil high in omegas and fatty acids that are beneficial to the hair follicles. When used regularly, it provides for stronger, fuller-looking hair.

This product also has many uses beyond scalp and hair moisturizing: it also doubles as a nourishing eyebrow and lash serum. Brush lightly onto lashes to provide a thicker, longer appearance.

It is packaged in Earth-friendly, dark glass bottles that are designed to help preserve the integrity of the oil. It comes with the Heritage Store 60-day money-back guarantee.

Desert Essence Jojoba Oil

Desert Essence Jojoba Oil is 100% pure. It is gentle and perfect for all skin types. It is cold-pressed and sourced using sustainable practices from native family farms in the Peruvian desert.

As you know, Jojoba is similar to the skin’s natural sebum and so moisturizes without leaving an oily residue or clogging pores. It’s naturally rich in vitamins and minerals and helps to gently cleanse and hydrate the skin, scalp, and hair. It provides 24-hour moisture and can be used as a hair protector, hair smoother, dry hair treatment, facial cleanser, body moisturizer, or massage oil. It is such a diverse product.

Special Add-On Treatments

Giovanni 2chic Ultra-Moist Dual Action Protective Leave-In Spray, For Dry Damaged Hair

After your hot oil treatment, the Giovanni 2chic Ultra-Moist Dual Action Protective Leave-In Spray is a nice compliment to finish your pampering. It’s a hydrating, weightless spray that controls frizz and restores radiance, shine, and luster back into your hair. Its paraben-free formula helps to enhance all color types and highlights.

Hobe Labs Energizer Hair Follicle Stimulator

Hobe Labs Energizer Hair Follicle Stimulator is a wonderful complement to the hot oil treatment for anyone looking for thicker, fuller hair—and let’s face it, who isn’t?—then this hair follicle stimulator is perfect! This contains jojoba oil and vitamin B5 to provide you with thicker, fuller hair. It contains a special blend of herbs to stimulate blood flow to the scalp while also protecting and conditioning to help create that thicker, fuller look between shampoos.

To use this fantastic product, towel dry your hair after shampooing. Spray the energizer stimulator on your hair and scalp, particularly on those thinning areas. There may be a slight tingling on the scalp as the product takes effect. Don’t worry about that. Just style your hair as usual, et voila!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Hot Oil Treatments

Once you have selected the oil you want to use, follow these steps for a DIY hot oil treatment.

You will need a wet brush, shower cap, and clarifying shampoo before you start.

Step 1

First, you need to shampoo your hair. A clarifying shampoo like Acure Curiously Clarifying Shampoo in Lemongrass and Argan would work best, as hot oils work best on clean hair: no buildup on hair allows for deep penetration to the hair cuticle.

Step 2

Once you have shampooed your hair, heat 3 to 6 tablespoons of oil to a temperature safe to touch before applying to your scalp. A pro tip is to apply the oil in the shower, so you do not damage clothing or bath linens. Use a Wet Brush Original Detangler Brush while in the shower to prepare the hair for an easy glide of application, as this should remove any knots.

Step 3

Next, you want to distribute oil from hair evenly from the ends all the way to your scalp and massage the oil in. At this time, you can place a shower cap like the Kitsch Deep Conditioning Processing Cap over your head. The treatment needs about 20 minutes to complete. It’s your choice whether to relax or complete a chore in those 20 minutes. (I always choose to relax!)

Step 4

After 20 minutes, rinse the oil out of your hair as best you can, then apply a conditioner as normal.

Step 5

Rinse, dry, and style your newly soft and glossy hair!

When Is The Best Time For A Hot Oil Treatment?

Hot oil treatments are not limited to any particular time of year. Each season has its challenges (summer sun exposure, winter dryness, etc.) which means your hair can always benefit from these treatments. You can do a hot oil treatment about once a week or more often if you think your hair needs it.

Will you try a hot oil treatment any time soon?
